New Year (5.5 Months) Update

Wow! Can’t believe 2017 is over already! What a year it has been!

The arrival of Emilia changed our lives forever and I wouldn’t change a thing. It has been an absolute joy seeing Emilia grow up day by day and I’m so glad and honoured to be her mother.

As we step into 2018, Emilia is now 5 and a half months old. Since it’s been a while since my last update, this post is going to be long. Please bear with me. 😛

The past two months have been a rollercoaster ride. Emilia keeps surprising and wow-ing us with new things she’s able to do. At the same time, the 4-month sleep regression hit her hard (compounded by teething and our house move back in November) and we have been struggling to get some decent quality sleep. It got so bad that we finally decided to sleep train her with a moderated cry-it-out method called Ferberizing. It is heartbreaking to hear her cry so loud for so long but after a few days of training, Emilia is sleeping slightly better.

Most days she can sleep from 10pm to around 5am, which is 7 hours before she wakes up for a feed. However, she still wakes up every 1-2 hours after that and I haven’t been able to let her cry it out for that chunk of time (from 5am to about 9am) because she thinks it’s day time with the sun being up and her gas prevents her from self-soothing. She also recently started rolling over onto her tummy every time we let her cry it out…

Honestly I think I’m just going to have to wait for her to grow it out. At some point she’s gotta learn to burp herself, right?

In terms of Emilia’s diet, the pediatrician said during Emilia’s 4-month checkup that we should wait until she is 6 months old to introduce solid food to her. This is because solid food doesn’t provide as much nutrients as breastmilk at this point. But as I’ve been eager to be able to leave Emilia for a few hours from time to time (she still refuses to eat from the bottle), the doctor said I could try giving her some rice cereal mixed with milk.

Emilia seemed confused but didn’t spit it out the first time we gave her rice cereal mixed with formula. But when we tried to replicate that the next day, she started spitting it out and we think it’s because she doesn’t like the taste of the formula. So the next time we tried mixing it with my breastmilk. She didn’t like that either. (I don’t blame her though as the rice cereal does taste pretty disgusting. 😛)

So we tried giving her some sweet potato. First time was a fail, possibly because the puree was not runny enough. Hopefully the next attempt will be successful. Because of Christmas, we haven’t tried again yet. We’ll probably start trying more consistently when she turns 6 months old in a few weeks.

Meanwhile, Emilia has been showing a lot of interest in our food and glasses of water. She’s also started drinking milk from spoons! Which means we can finally leave her with her grandparents so we could go out on a date!

On December 28, we went on our first date since Emilia was born! Andres secretly organized for Emilia’s grandparents to babysit her so that we could go watch Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It was such a nice gesture and surprise, especially since I broke into tears the night before due to Emilia not falling back asleep at 5am. We even went for dinner! The movie was great and we really enjoyed our little break. 😊

You would have noticed from the pictures above that Emilia can now sit in the high chair. She’s really quite strong physically. These are her milestones (I’m really writing these down just so I can have a record 😛):

It’s difficult to remember everything that’s happened in the last 2.5 months so here’s my best attempt with the help of some bullet points and photos. (I’d suggest following me on Instagram for more frequent updates 😅)

Now that it’s 2018 and Emilia is a little older, we can venture out more! I’ve been wanting to take Emilia out more often to experience more things as I’m starting to feel bored for her for playing with the same toys every day. One of my new year’s resolutions is to take Emilia to infant play and swimming classes.

I’m taking action already! I signed Emilia up for a swimming class next Friday! I’m so excited! Emilia loves her baths and water so I think she’ll enjoy it. It’s a free trial class. If everything goes well we’ll register her for a more regular schedule. 😊

My friend who has a baby 2 months younger than Emilia also told me about this drop-in music program so I’m going to go check it out with her next Wednesday as well. Hopefully Emilia enjoys it.

Last but not least, I’m back at pole! Yesterday I had my first class post-baby! I’m starting back from Pole Beginner 2 as I tried doing a chin up in a subway train recently and failed. I’m glad I’m still able to climb. With difficulty and ugly flexed foot, but I can still do it! I just can’t get my ass up yet. Hopefully I’ll be able to pole twice a week and be able to invert again in a few months. I’m so excited to see all your lovely faces at the studio again! 😆
